By Edric Mesmer:
Author Norma Kassirer, a longtime Buffalo resident, will read for the launch of her new novel, Katzenjammered (BlazeVOX, 2010), on the First Friday, February 4th, 7:00 p.m. at the Western New York Books Arts Collaborative.
Magic Elizabeth, Kassirer’s first book for children, published in 1966, was republished many times and is now, for the first time, appearing in original serial form. The Doll Snatchers followed in 1969, and a collection of her more surreal stories, The Hidden Wife, was published in 1991 by Shuffaloff. Her poems and stories often blend through narrative, and her recent novel has been noted for its poetic line.
Kassirer’s stories and poems have appeared over the years in Blatant Artifice, Sow’s Ear, Yellow Edenwald Field, and elsewhere. A selection of Kassirer’s paintings and hand-made books will also be on display for this event.
Here’s what people have been saying:
“Katzenjammered is a brilliantly compelling illumination of the nature of storytelling. Through the haunting imagery of interwoven narratives, the tale carries the reader through family mythology, tragedy, and beyond. With, in the words of the young protagonist, ‘each syllable broken into light and shadow’, the language is a joy to read.” - Donna Wyszomierski
